Guide to reconstucting clothing

[ Posted by krista Fri, 12 Oct 2007 13:29:28 GMT ]

Finally i made somewhat of a guide. Tell me what you think!

Reconstructed clothing guide.

Why reconstruct clothes?
-to recycle
-to save money
-to lessen the amount of storage
-to clean your closet
-to make items personal and one of a kind
-to save your favorite clothing from the trash

How do you start?

In my opinion you should start small to get the hang of it. Take a piece of clothing and add something to it. A design, some trim, some kind of flair.
Or You can do something else small like take something away, take out a hem for a rough edge, take off the lace trim, take off the design.

A slightly more advanced thing to do is modifying structure. Subtract length, to sleeves, pant legs, the bottom of a shirt Subtract the size of the shirt by taking in seams. You can do other things like change the collar type of a shirt, add a collar, add a layered collar. Maybe add some sleeves, modify the type of sleeve, add fabric to the sleeves.

Then even more advanced is for more experienced sewers. You can use a pattern to make modifications, completely rework items like making one item into another.. Example, make pants into shirt, make shirt into skirt, make skirt into purse. You can even do something like cut open all seams and hems and think of the item as just plain fabric use a pattern or just freehand it.

What I do is think of something I might want or need and raid my storage for supplies to make that item. Or when i get bored I look for something in storage that I  like and see what i could make out of it.

If you get stuck just do some simple moves.. fold it, look at it, imagine it as something else, take out a seam and then look at it again, take off trim, sleeves anything else and look again .. it will come to you !

And most important!
SAVE ALL YOUR SCRAPS! things that come in handy..
trim, elastic, strips and pieces of fabric, decorative items, snaps, buttons, lace, patterns and everything else! These all could become something. even if you cannot work it as an item itself it could be an add on to another item.

I hope this might help someone make the effort to get a little creative and crafty :)
And if someone has any additions to this guide then please help me by sending suggestions.

Duct Tape Diaper Cover

[ Posted by krista Tue, 02 Oct 2007 14:42:39 GMT ]

I have been experimenting again!!

Wanting to cut some costs around the household i have decided to use cloth diapers. I figured if we did that and only used disposable diapers when he goes for a sleep or when we are out we could be saving around 30$ a month. That is a nice extra payment toward debt..

Yesterday i made him some cloth diapers with some soakers which i will be showing how to make but i wanted some plastic or vinyl coverings so if he leaks through it would not get all over. I tried making one out of vinyl that i had from a pillow case cover but it ripped from my son playing..

I had nothing that was any thicker, until i thought of the old technique of making fabric out of duct tape.

This is all experimental so i will keep an update on how the cover does.

Step one. Make some duct tape fabric.

Shrinky dinks !! on the cheap!

[ Posted by krista Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:13:04 GMT ]

I found something that is a little bit cool, a little bit crafty and a little bit of recycling.

It is shrinky dinks! apparently you do not have to run to your local craft store for these! you can just reuse some plastics you might have on hand that you were going to throw out!

I am so excited for this because i used to play with these when younger, but now i am older i can think of other applications but i am too cheap to buy things for crafting. So here is a little tutorial from chrisjob at curbly.com

Creative paper working.

[ Posted by krista Fri, 24 Aug 2007 12:59:35 GMT ]

I ran into this little gem of an idea this morning and thought it would be fun to try ( i will post my attempt later)

But this is a wonderful way to do a small part of recycling and reusing of your junk mail or the newspaper ads we toss.  I think this could be done by most people, not too hard and it would be a good one for the older children to do too. I think things like this should be embraced more because it is something you can do with little to no money unlike a lot of the other crafts that bring you to the point of buying out an entire craft store just to get started. Please people remember, use what you have on hand first. It will save you money. then when you are done with that then move on to other things. If you stick with what you have on hand it will force you to use your imagination and expand your mind and talents.

but enought with my rant!

Here is what you'll want to see from A little hut

[ Posted by krista Wed, 15 Aug 2007 16:05:09 GMT ]

You know what i have at the moment? all of my crafting stuff tossed into totes that are unlabeled in the basement. *sigh* maybe someday !

But until then i will just imagine i have this room

Check out the other shots of it on her website

Baby shower idea!

[ Posted by krista Wed, 15 Aug 2007 16:00:03 GMT ]

I have been to a few showers here and there recently. It seems that everyone is pregnant!

I think that the MOST helpful thing to get from someone is diapers. You tend to go through a ton of them and you seem to spend an entire fortune! So when giving a bag of diapers to that expecting MRS. then do it in a fun way.

DIAPER CAKE!

Diapers

Just click the picture for full instructions! I would suggest different sizes tho. i got too many newborns and not enough size 3's which both my boys were wearing the most of when they were smaller. Also if you are expecting and wanting to do a registry then please ad onto the requesting (somehow) what type and size of diapers you would like. I hate getting what i use and then the other person not liking them from their previous child.

Very nice clay work!!

[ Posted by krista Tue, 14 Aug 2007 23:21:51 GMT ]

I have came upon a myspace blogger who has been working with clay making many rather charming pendants.
First off she seems to have a real talent with this, lots of stuff i like myself and unlike a lot of other places these pieces do not cost you an arm and leg for a one of a kind piece of art!

Recycle glass containers

[ Posted by krista Mon, 13 Aug 2007 16:50:50 GMT ]

I am in love with this idea. I have tons of glass baby food jars, condiment bottles and more so i have been thinking on what to do with them. This is a nice and cheap craft you can do for the window, for the bathroom, to hang or to just to have on a shelf.

Wonderful fall idea!

[ Posted by krista Sun, 12 Aug 2007 16:34:56 GMT ]

I would love to see something like this on my table for the fall.

Fall leaf into rose

I would like to see other people doing a cheap craft like this. It looks rather easy. But i will have to see as soon as i can find a tree.  (it is hard when you only have a few saplings in your yard)
